Process and Reality is Alfred North Whitehead’s magnum opus and a foundational text in process philosophy. Based on his Gifford Lectures at the University of Edinburgh (1927–28), the book presents Whitehead’s philosophy of organism — a rejection of materialist metaphysics that emphasises actual entities as processes rather than substances. Whitehead reinterprets the cosmos as a continuous creative advance into novelty and asserts that relations among events constitute reality.

Whitehead was trained as a mathematician and co‑authored Principia Mathematica with Bertrand Russell. In Process and Reality he draws on his background in mathematics and physics to offer an alternative metaphysical framework, replacing the traditional ontology of static substances with a dynamic ontology of “actual occasions.” Creativity is the ultimate principle of his system, and even God is conceived as participating in the ongoing process of becoming.

This trade paperback edition from Free Press reproduces the corrected edition edited by David Ray Griffin and Donald W. Sherburne. Ideal for students and scholars, it provides a clear and authoritative text of Whitehead’s most influential work on cosmology and metaphysics.
